Yes, You Can Get a Tattoo on a Scar

Have you ever wondered if you can get a tattoo on a scar and how it will turn out? First off, yes, you can get a tattoo on a scar. Though to make sure that you get a tattoo that you are going to love forever, you need to follow a few basic steps.

Step One: Your scar needs to be fully healed before you even consider getting a tattoo on it. For smaller scars, this can take anywhere from 9 months to 2 years. Your scar needs to no longer have any redness and even scars that appear healed on the outside, are often still healing beneath the skin. For grafted skin, a good rule of thumb is to wait at least a year and 1/2 to 2 years after your last grafting procedure. Grafted skin often has redness forever, even long after it's fully healed, so you can't really judge it by appearances alone. That is why it is recommended to wait until you are sure it is fully healed.

Step Two: Find a tattoo design that you really love and that will work with the shape and texture of your scar. This is especially important for hiding small scars. If you have a round raised scar and choose a lizard tattoo, you lizard may end up looking like it has a tumor. People with grafted skin want to choose a design that works well with the texture of their grafted skin. Things like dragons, fish and spider webs look fantastic on grafted skin. Remember that tattoos are permanent, so choosing a design that you will love forever is very important.

Step Three: Find the right tattoo artist. Tattooing on scar tissue is different from getting a tattoo on un-scarred skin. You want to find a tattoo artist with experience in tattooing on scars. Don't be afraid to ask potential tattoo artists, how many tattoos they have done on scarred or grafted skin. You may find some tattoo artists are not even willing to do it at all. That doesn't mean it can't be successfully done, it just means that tattoo artist doesn't have the kind of experience that you are looking for.

You also want to choose a tattoo artist that is willing to work on the same tattoo multiple times. Tattooing on a scar can take more than one visit. Tattoos on scars are more likely to have ink spreading, blurry edges and trouble holding color. A good tattoo artist will do multiple touch-ups on this type of tattoo, to make sure you are 100% satisfied with the end result.

Yes, you can get a tattoo on a scar. You just need to find the right design and the right tattoo artist. Then your new tattoo will look fantastic forever!
