Some Types of Animation Software

One thing that you'll come across in animation school is the different kinds of software that are available. As technology has evolved over the decades, it's become relatively easy to create any kind of animation with computer software.

Computers at first didn't exist for animation purposes; they were geared more towards engineering and calculating purposes. Yet, as the technology eventually developed, it allowed for the ability to use graphics in a way that few imagined.

One of the first computer graphic tools was the Sketchpad, which was developed in the early 1960s. The Sketchpad used a light pen with a photoelectric cellto create images on a computer screen. Even more revolutionary, the image could actually be saved. Future developments based on the Sketchpad, such as the Wacom tablet, has become popular in animation schools as an invaluable tool for creating graphics and animation.

Most animation software has made it easier for animators and filmmakers to enhance their productions. Look at a movie for example; back in the day shooting a crowd scene would involve thousands of extras and hours upon hours of work. With animation software, you can eliminate the man hours it would take to orchestrate crowds and the actual physical shooting. Sure, it takes a bit longer to design everything, but it also eliminates location scouting as everything can be done within the computer. Also, if you're using state of the art software in animation school, you have more flexibility to create something incredibly realistic.

If you're thinking of attending an animation school, but don't have much experience, you may want to explore a program like Adobe Flash. This is a great program if you're just starting out, as it allows you to make easy animations with a fair amount of options, including video as well as if you're creating something for the internet. Flash has become incredibly popular for its multimedia capabilities and accessibility.

Sometimes the technology can be a bit overwhelming, but if you take the time to get an understanding of how animation software works it can greatly help you develop a style and make the actual process less time consuming. Animation schools are great for giving you the ability confront these programs head on, allowing you to find your niche.

Don't be afraid of trying new programs. Experimenting with different kinds of software can also be beneficial in helping you develop your animating skills. If you're interested in 3D animation, then programs like MAYA, 3D Max, Lightwave 3D and XSI might be worth checking out as they have great capacity for creating projects in 3D, especially if you're a first time animator.

It greatly depends of what kind of look you want and how extensive a design you have. Some of these programs may be great if you're working on something complicated, but you may also want to give Flash a whirl if you want to do something basic.

However, if you're planning on attending an animation school, you'll more than likely have the opportunity to play around with these programs.
