IPL tattoo removal or Intense Pulse Light therapy is considered the best way of removing a tattoo if you can afford the significant expense. The equipment used to remove tattoos comes at a high cost and obviously this cost is relayed to the customer.
Is IPL the same as laser tattoo removal
No it isn't. This is one of the misconceptions about IPL tattoo removal. The process is completely different, the only similarities being that both use light particles to remove tattoos.
How does IPL Tattoo Removal work?
In simple, high level terms, a concentrated beam of light is placed through a prism which is directed to the site of the tattoo. The light is subsequently absorbed by the ink particles in the skin and causes the particles to break up.
Over time the damaged ink particles are absorbed by the body and removed from sight. The further away the tattoo is from the heart, the longer it takes for the tattoo to completely heal.
Are there any side effects of IPL?
At the site of the tattoo immediately after treatment the skin turns very pale with possible bruising and irritation. The bruising will vanish very quickly and be replaced by blisters or scab formations. Within 7-14 days the wound will have healed although it is recommended that the area is protected from direct exposure to sunlight for up to 6 weeks after treatment.
Does Scarring occur?
In almost all cases scarring is non-existent although 2% of cases do report scarring of some kind - generally these aren't as severe as other treatments such as dermabrasion though.
In a minority of cases slight changes in pigmentation may occur at the treated areas. It is generally considered a very safe method of tattoo removal though.
What are the Drawbacks?
Essentially cost is the main drawback. The cost of such treatment is out of reach for the majority of the population as treatments generally cost in the thousands of dollars depending on the size and darkness of the tattoo in question.
People who want to remove their tattoo are generally advised to look into other less serious forms of removal such as topical peels (TCA or Glycolic acid) or even to follow home based tattoo removal guides that are proving very popular over the last few years with notably high success rates.
