Influence of Chinese Calligraphy Tattoos

The eastern oriental influence of Chinese calligraphy has an extensive and rich history in the Western Hemisphere. Chinese calligraphy is an ancient art form stemming back to almost 3,000 years ago. Many masters throughout Chinese history have left behind their own exceptional interpretation of the Chinese characters. Tu Mang, nevertheless correlated it all together with form identification and style. He established names for the techniques used to describe the words.

Chinese calligraphy is a Greek word meaning beautiful writing and is seen everywhere from art galleries to restaurants and tattoo shops. It can make beautiful tattoos because of its elegance and simplicity, the foreign nature of the script adds a more exotic look to your body art. Many people choose to get Chinese characters tattooed on their bodies because they enjoy the novelty or to make a statement that not everyone can read or understand.

Chinese characters get specific meaning across when used in calligraphy, the techniques and materials play a part in their art form. There are 5 separate types of characters used in Chinese style calligraphy.

SEAL SCRIPT- comes from the formal style of writing no longer used or studied. The use is only for calligraphy and painting or other art works.

CLERICAL SCRIPT - this worked from Seal Script and the characters are flatter and broader than earlier or later style. This is occasionally used for decorative and calligraphy reason but not handwritten.

SEMI CURSIVE SCRIPT-the characters look so most similar to normal handwriting. The characters can run in each other, which can make it harder to read than normal characters.

CURSIVE SCRIPT-in this style the brush never leaves the page, so all the characters run together and used more for its readability.

REGULAR SCRIPT- is the standard form of Chinese calligraphy, easier to recognize, read and print, so most people who learn Chinese writing start with this type.

The sub culture of tattooing continues to tell stories with Chinese calligraphy, tattooing is no longer a past time but a part of pop culture. Many musicians, stars, and athletes sport tattoos.
