If a Tattoo is No Longer Wanted, Can it Be Removed?

Many years ago, it was thought that if you have a tattoo today, you will have it for life. No thought was ever given to removing a tattoo with anything less than mortal pain. It was, up until a very short time ago, almost impossible to remove the skin discoloration know as the tattoo. However, the removal process may have been extremely painful in earlier years, but advances in technology now gives superior processes for removing tattoos. At this time, two different systems for removing tattoos are in use widespread and becoming very popular. These two systems are laser technology and light based technology.

These two surgeries, properly called thus, use the energy of light to demolish the ink. Ink, when subject to intense light, will absorb the energy of the medium and, subsequently, break up. After beginning to break up, it will easily be passed through the body and through filtering, out for disposal.. For the most part, this process is very safe. True because the ink is broken up into virtually micro sized particles. These part;icles will pass through the body systems and out with no apparent complications.

This process is very similar to that used to medically remove unwanted hair from the body. The practitioner, normally a surgeon or doctor, that performs this surgery passes a wand over the skin needing treatment. The wand has emitters for either high intensity light or laser pulses. In doing this, the pulses of light or laser are directed toward the tattoo, thereby breaking up the ink. Usually held tight against the tattoo on the skin, making the pulses of light or laser very efficient.

The sensation experienced may be best likened to an elastic or rubber band being "popped" against your skin over and over. If the tattoo is very large, the resulting pain will definitely be somewhat more intense. The location of the tattoo is also an issue. Sensitive areas of the body could cause a considerable amount of pain. Should the area of the tattoo has no muscle or tissue, more than likely the practitioner may suggest that numbing is necessary before starting the procedure.

The laser and intense light based treatment are very similar. The doctor doing the procedure will most likely apply a cooling gel to the area of the tattoo being treated with both laser and intense light applications. The gel will help in cooling the skin and also conduct the light energy more efficiently. In essence, cooling gel helps draw the light to the tattoo and, at the same time, protect your skin for damage and pain. This cooling gel helps to draw the light, and at the same time protect your skin. Cool to the touch, the gel will help your skin react efficiently to the light pulses in breaking the ink apart.

Should you have an unwanted tattoo and thinking of having it removed. both intense light and laser systems should be considered. However, you must know that both can be quite expensive and do impose certain risks. However large the tattoo you want removed and what procedure the medical professional suggest, a night or two in the hospital may be necessary. You should think about the decision before deciding to go ahead. Both procedures do have ways to remove your tattoo but it is no small conclusion you must make.
