Brief on Different Types of Animation

Animation is the process of quickly displaying sequence of 2D or 3D images, artwork or model that it gives the illusion of movement. In more simple terms, it refers to bringing non living objects or art to life. It is widely applied in many places ranging from film industry to gaming industry, advertisement to commercial presentation, construction to engineering, automobiles and much more. It facilitates all those things that are otherwise impossible in real world life.

Since the beginning till date, animation has evolved into many categories. There are different types of animations used today; some rarely and other intensely.

Types of Animation

1. Traditional Animation - it was widely used in the 20th century in various animated films. They are also referred as hand drawn animations because all the sketches and drawings were drawn on a paper first with slight variation or alteration from one another and then they were displayed in sequence to create the illusion of movement. Hand drawn or traditional animation became obsolete at the beginning of 21st century.

2. Stop Motion Animation - stop motion is the process where a film is made by arranging all those photographs that were taken frame by frame of a physically manipulated real world objects. Clay and paper models were popularly used.

3. Computer Animation - it is the process where a computer generated graphics, imagery or models are animated with the use of various computer software applications. It is the successor of the stop motion animating technique. Computer animation is being categorised into:-

A. 2D Animation - they are the primary or early form of computer animation. It is a process where separate objects and separate layers are created or built, with or without the use virtual skeleton to create an illusion of movement. It is used for vivid, low bandwidth and quick real time rendering.

B. 3D Animation - it is the modern and widely used form of computer animation where all the objects and layers are created on the computer and then out-fitted to a virtual skeleton. Various computer software applications such as 3dmax, Maya, Mud Box and much more are used to create high form of photorealistic animation.
