The Term Defines:
Did we think animation can be on top of the world dictating terms in every industry some years ago? Though its direct impact may not be visible in certain industries, but it surely plays an invisible hand in that. By the word, animation refers to the act of giving life. Technically, it is a creation of illusion of movement by rapid display of a sequence of images or drawings. This can be done either with hand-made art, computer generated imagery, three-dimensional objects or a combination of techniques. Much of the credit goes to the advent of computer technologies that have been helping us to create 2D and 3D animations from the beginning. It has significantly cut down the labour and time, thereby, reducing the cost associated with it.
Not surprisingly, the phenomenon of motion was well explained long before in the palaeolithic cave paintings, where animals are depicted with multiple legs in superimposed positions to give a clear picture for the flow of motion. But today, we are able to cut fine all these motion flow in the form of 2D and 3D formats. Right from cartoons on TV to animated feature films, we take the help of these formats. The power of animation can be rightly understood in commercials, infomercials, e-cards, etc. Vodafone zoo zoo ads, which are critically acclaimed serves as the best example for current trend.
Various Techniques Include:
2D relies on vector graphics. It means they comply with certain mathematical equations. Similar to 2D is 3D, which deals with the creation of moving pictures in 3 dimensional digital environment. Of late, 3D has been the lifeline in most of these projects. There are good number of 3D animated films in the industry such as Avatar, Ice Age, The Incredibles, Rio, Madagascar, A bug's life, Ratatouille, etc., where you can sense all the difference from 2D films. Both 2D and 3D come under computer animation techniques.
Other famous techniques include Traditional, Full, Limited, Rotoscoping, Live-action/animation, Puppet, Clay, Cutout, Silhouette, Model animation, Go motion, Object, Graphic, Brickfilm, and Pixilation. These techniques only suggest a greater scope of exploration in animation. To give it a credit, two remarkable awards are earmarked namely:
- Academy award for best animated feature
- Academy award for best animated short film
Therefore, it can be concluded that the world of animation has a long way to go and form a rich source of money for them who will have taken it as their career path.
